Mother-of-seven who stole €1,000 designer handbag was addicted to drugs, court heard

A mother-of-seven who was caught stealing a designer handbag worth almost €1,000 was a drug addict at the time, a court has heard.

Ichelle Maloney (37), who also shoplifted at a pharmacy and supermarket, was “embarrassed” by her actions.

Judge Paula Murphy adjourned the case for a probation report after Maloney, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft.

Dublin District Court heard the defendant walked into Designer Exchange on Exchequer Street on January 31, picked out a handbag worth €995 and left without paying.

She was arrested and the bag was recovered.

Maloney stole goods worth €42 from the Conefrey Pharmacy on Pearse Street on February 7, but it was not recovered.

She was one of a group of people who stole £231 worth of alcohol from SuperValu, Aston Quay on February 23. Some members of the group were arrested and €154 worth of alcohol was recovered.

Maloney was verbally abusive towards staff when he was arrested.

Maloney realized it was “out of the question for a mother of seven to behave” and she wanted nothing to do with drugs now, her lawyer David Bassett said.
